About Fat Tire Bikes

     Ebike Fat Tire History 01           Ebike-Fat-Tire-History 02

Despite a hefty appearance, fat bikes have the ability to make you feel like you are floating. This is because the tires have such low air pressure, allowing you to roll over just about any terrain; snowy, rocky, wet, muddy, dry and so on. Additionally, the thickness of the tires is able to achieve more contact area with a firm grip on terrain that would be difficult for an ordinary bike to conquer.

Fat tire bikes were first used in Alaska during the 80’s. Designed to navigate snowy grounds; the wide tire would allow both bikes to glide on top of compacted snow. Around the same time, fat tire bikes were introduced to Mexico to ride on soft sands.

Today, they are used for so much more than just the snow and desert. Known as “fatbiking”, fat tire bikes are commonly used for recreational actives, sports, adventuring, as well as being an alternative mode of transport for many; replacing cars, public transport and the conventional bicycle.

Electric Fat Tire Bikes

Maneuvering an ordinary fat tire bike can be rather sluggish. Electric fat bikes solved that issue by adding a pedal assist system which activates a motor, and is powered by a battery.

The DEFENDER-S by EUNORAU

The DEFENDER-S, is a 26" x 4.0" fat tire electric bike. It’s especially popular amongst hunting and fishing communities because it’s one of the robust bikes on the market. It can take on tough backtrails whilst transporting big game with no trouble. It’s an electric fat tire bike renowned for its exceptional quality and durability, along with its affordable price. Premium quality products that are set at fair prices is common practice at EUNORAU, because electric mobility should be accessible to everyone.

Competitors

Megatron

There are many electric fat tire bikes and brands out there, but are they as good as EUNORAU? That’s up to you to decide. Two similar models on the market as the DEFENDER-S, is the Super Monarch Crown from E-Cells, and the Megatron from Rambo Bikes.

Frame, wheels, weight and payload.

All three models are designed having the same Aluminum Alloy 6061 frame, but have different tire sizes, overall weight and payload capacity. The tires on the DEFENDER-S are 26”X4.0” (66cm x 10.16cm) KENDA sport tires, the Super Monarch Crown sports Vee Bulldozer 26” x 4.25” (66cm x10.8cm) tires, and the Megatron comes with Maxxis Minion 26” x 4.8” (66cm x 12 cm) tires.

The heaviest out the three models is the 95lbs Super Monarch, while the most lightweight model is the 77lbs Megatron. The weight of the DEFENDER-S is 84lbs; placing it in the middle.

Although it has the largest tires of out all three e-bikes, the Megatron’s light weight doesn’t carry as much payload; having the capacity of just 300lbs (136kg). Being able to carry 100lbs (45 kg) more, is the Super Monarch Crown with a 400lbs (181kg) capacity, and then the DEFENDER-S; having an outstanding payload capacity of 440lbs (200kg)- more than enough for the average adult, plus a lot of additional cargo.

Suspension and motor

Both the DEFENDER-S and Super Monarch Crown have full/dual suspension along with a twin BAFANG 750w hub motor.

The DEFENDER-S has inverted front suspension, and an RST fork; helping save energy, absorb bumps and shocks on rugged routes. The EXA rear suspension also minimizes shocks through its adjustable spring design- absorbing air from all angles; greatly improving and enhancing performance, as well as enabling a smooth ride.

The Super Monarch Crown has a Dual Crown Fork with 120mm of travel plus compression at the front, and the RockShox Monarch RL at the back; an adjustable spring that helps smooth rides on vigorous trails.

The Megatron is a hardtail e-bike, and only has front suspension (which explains why it is the lightest model). It holds a 1000w BAFANG motor, and looked at as a good choice for riders who want an all-purpose fat e-bike. However, when looking for the ultimate adventure on the mountains, it won’t absorb big hits like a full-suspension e-bike. Riders may feel exhausted after enduring trail buzz.

Battery, max speed, average range

Batteries are hidden on both the Megatron and DEFENDER-S, and both models also have an average range of 80 miles (128km) using pedal assist. The battery on the Super Monarch Crown is left exposed, while the range of the Monarch claims it can also reach up to 80 miles using pedal assist.
